Social media is arguably the most powerful growth tool on the internet. Ironically, it’s also the most difficult to master.
In a study by Ascend2, 40% of digital marketers cited social as the “most difficult” channel to master (a tie for first with websites). Asked to identify the most difficult tactic on this most difficult channel, the answer — by a landslide — was three words: creating compelling content.
Every night, when I come home from work, I walk by a little billboard in the Hoboken PATH station that makes me gnash my teeth. It’s an ad for a yoga studio. I’ve seen two variations, one for men and one for women. The billboard meant for women contains 15 words of copy: “I am a sister. I am a runner. I am authentic. I do hot yoga.”
The sign reads like a parody of the worst kind of lifestyle advertising. What does being a sister have to do with yoga? The more I walk by it, the less sense it makes. The third line gets to me the most, though. “I am authentic” just doesn’t communicate anything concrete or valuable to the consumer.
There are plenty of popular marketing terms that irritate me (“subject-matter experts,” “micro-moments,” “thought leadership”), but “authentic” bothers me the most. While crappy buzzwords are usually just convoluted ways of saying simple things, “authentic” is especially problematic because of its hollowness. Marketers frequently use it in a way that’s either meaningless or contradictory.
Now I get to make sure that the word never ends up on The Content Strategist.
For many of you, increasing your followers on social media is probably part of your goals for 2017. But are your strategies actually hurting you? Take a look at the biggest brand social media turnoffs and see if you are making these mistakes.
“Growth Hacking” – What does it actually mean?
Well, in the first instance, you need to acknowledge the fact that whatever growth hacking is, it can change the way you look at your marketing strategy. Of course, it is a lot different from the traditional ways of marketing and can dramatically boost the success rate.
Ever since Sean Ellis coined this term in 2010, it created a buzz in the market. Earlier, businesses were constrained to one geographic region only, but now there are numerous ways of flourishing around the globe.
In a short description – it’s neither a magical world, nor something out of the world; rather it is a way to describe the marketing strategies leveraged by the startups.
