I was very excited to try the new Reporting Services visualizations in SQL Server 2016, namely Treemaps and Sunbursts (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms170438.aspx).
So I kicked off the SQL Server setup on my dev machine (Windows 10 with SQL 2008R2, 2012 and 2014 already installed) and configured Reporting Services to run with a service account.
So far so good.
After a few minutes, I got this strange error message (that I never had seen with previous installations of SQL Server):
So I thought, it may be a permission issue.
I tried running setup under a different account, tried running as administrator, tried to manually set permissions on the C:\windows\temp folder (which I couldn’t, no matter what I tried), but nothing worked.
I finally stumbled on this post (from March 2015) which hinted (way at the bottom of the post!) towards a conflict with Avast self-defense mechanism.
So, before clicking “Retry”, I disabled Avast self-defense mechanism:
Settings -> Troubleshooting -> Uncheck “Enable Avast self-defense module”
Confirmed, then clicked on the “Retry” button in the SQL Server setup and voilà, the installation completed successfully!
Not sure why it only happens when you install Reporting Services but hey, the workaround allowed the installation to complete successfully.. 🙂
